Hoax virus alerts. We've all had them. I've had loads, and they're all very simlar. First, the alert. Then then disection.
Dear Everyone
PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS FOR.
If you receive an email titled "It Takes Guts to Say Jesus"
DO NOT OPEN IT.
It will erase everything on your hard drive.
This information was announced yesterday morning from IBM; AOL states that this is a very dangerous virus, much worse than "Melissa", and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.
Some very sick individual has succeeded in using the reformat function from Norton Utilities causing it to completely erase all documents on the hard drive.
It has been designed to work with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible computers.
This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it.
Pass this warning along to EVERYONE in your address book and please share it with all your online friends ASAP so that threat may be stopped.
Please practice cautionary measures and tell anyone that may have access to your computer.
Forward this warning to everyone that might access the Internet.
It does sound almost believeable, doesn't it?
But, here's why it isn't
If you receive an email titled "It Takes Guts to Say Jesus"
The subject of the "dangerous" e-mail changes from hoax to hoax.
It will erase everything on your hard drive.
If you believe the hoaxes, all virii erase everything on your harddrive
This information was announced yesterday morning from IBM
You have a computer, so who hasn't heard of IBM. Everyone knows IBM, everyone trusts IBM. So if IBM say there's a virus, there must be a virus!
AOL states that this is a very dangerous virus
Another keyword that everyone with just half a clue will have heard of. AOL, same reason for adding them to the mail as IBM. It adds effect
much worse than "Melissa"
According to the hoaxes, all virii are worse than "Melissa". Why? Because Melissa got much public attention, people believe they know what it does. People are scared by it. So, this latest virus must be really bad, if it's worse than "Melissa"
there is NO remedy for it at this time.
There never does seem to be a remedy. Quick, tell everyone to not read their mail. That's the logic the hoxers are working with
reformat function from Norton Utilities
Oh ere, that sounds technical. It must be serious
It has been designed to work with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
People who use neither of these browsers are likely to have a clue about things, so this warning will have no effect on them
It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible computers.
Lets face it. 100% of the people the e-mail is intended to scare will be using either a Mac, or and IBM compat. Think about it
That's the basic recepie (spelling aside) for a virux hoax. Make sure you "warn" people it's worse than a well know virus. Make sure you include names of big companies, it adds more substance to the "warning". Make sure something halfway technical is included. That way, you scare people into thinking they'll get a virus.
This is by no means a dig at the people who send me these "warnings" or anything. This is just intended to be informational to people, so I don't get any more of them
:o)
